Roots hosts a variety of programs, evolving in response to community needs.

Community Offerings

If you would like to participate in any of our Community Offerings, outlined below, please contact us and indicate what activities are of interest to you.

 

Community Meeting

Tuesday Mornings 10-11
The Roots
Community meeting will be held weekly.  The meeting is open to all Roots members.  Community meeting will be a time to share upcoming events and workshops, propose ideas for workshops, fundraisers, and field trips, and to share updates/concerns with the Roots community.

 

Community Meal

Tuesday 11:00-1:00
Join community in an opportunity to get together and make a menu plan, budget and prepare meals. Experience new foods, new ways of cooking them or bring some expertise to the dish.  All participants will enjoy delicious food from the local community. (additional fee of $4 for part-time students)

 

Local Community

Tuesday  1:00-4:00, hosted by Ginny Chadwick
This offering will explore the many different aspects of Columbia and the surrounding area. The group will take field trips to places such as Goats Beard Farms, Hillcreek Yarn Studio, the Columbia Tribune, the Columbia landfill, and many other unique places.  Local Community’s intends to expand participants’ perspective about the world in which we live, through hands on activities and experience.

 

Roots Café

Thursday 1:00-4:00
These hours are designated for youth to plan workshops and events, meet to work on individual or group projects, get peer/staff feedback on works in progress, meet with staff to discuss path ways on individually created courses of study, and to help improve and maintain the Roots space.  Members attending Roots Café hours will be committed to creating purpose for themselves and the communityby being prepared to contribute to an environment of learning and growth. 

 

Open Campus

Wednesday 1:30-3:30
This is an option for older Roots members. The intention for this time is simply social.

 

Expressive Arts

Thursday Mornings 10-12, h osted by Christine Clay 
A series of art workshops for Root students ages 7-10.  Where students can explore different materials, while developing imagination and problem solving skills.  We will use historic, cultural, natural, and personal elements to inspire our work.

 

Children’s Workshop

Last Wednesday of the month 10-11:15

 A meeting time for parents and children younger than 7 years old.  A creative project will be offered for and by parents while children play or help participate in the craft activity. There will be a material and workshop fee of $10
.

 

Sprouts Play Group

Wednesday Mornings 10-12
This is a parent co-op play group. Families are welcome to meet visit, create group activities and play.  The play group is open to all members and non-members.  This is an offsite location.

Enrollment is based on fall semester commitment (September-December tuition).  Cost of tuition is sliding scale based on income and ability to pay.  A maximum of 50% of payment may be received in work trade @ $10-$15/hour based on skill requirement or 75% of tuition through work trade if weekly workshop facilitation is part of commitment.
